The Bear Went Over the Mountain: Soviet Combat Tactics in Afghanistan

The Bear Went Over the Mountain has been around since the 1980’s.  When Les Grau originally wrote Bear it was printed only in limited quantities and largely overlooked because the military establishment saw no real value in the book. After all, America had learned its lesson about fighting an insurgent war in Vietnam. The Soviets got their butts kicked in Afghanistan and there was no way we would allow America to become involved in another insurgency. Hmm… Funny how history has a way of repeating itself! Fast forward to 2001 and we were (and still are) in Afghanistan fighting the same enemy the Soviets fought, on the same ground, using the same tactics.

Les Grau had the foresight to understand warfare and the value of lessons learned. By examining thousands of documents at the Soviet War College he was able to compile a series of short stories that impart readers with rare glimpses into the past conflict. The battle reports were written by Soviet junior officers and include detailed descriptions of the various tactics used by the Soviets and the Mujaheddin during the Soviet-Afghan war. Each battle report is complete with a map to help readers visualize the fight. Many of the areas described in the book are still active today.

Every Soldier, Airmen, Marine, and Sailor needs to read “Bear Went Over the Mountain” before deploying to Afghanistan. AskTOP sponsor and online retailer GiPubs.com sells the most affordable copy available on the market. Check out the link below for more information.
