Example Initial Counseling for a First Sergeant Memorandum of a Signal Company

The Mentor - A Comprehensive Guide to Army Counseling and Leadership

This is an example of an Initial Counseling for a First Sergeant Memorandum of a Signal Company. It can be used as an example of how to write an initial counseling memo for a First Sergeant explaining his/her expected duties and responsibilities.  This memorandum defines the expectations the writer has as a Commander for the position as a 1SG for the Signal Company. The writer wants to take the opportunity to review all of the duties and responsibilities the writer expects from the First Sergeant as the senior enlisted non-commissioned officer of the company.  The writer wants to emphasize on promoting a climate where fear is minimized and mistakes are tolerated providing soldiers with an environment to learn and grow.  Professional growth will be the writer’s emphasis.  However, it is the writer’s ultimate responsibility that the personnel in the unit are well trained, properly equipped and capable of performing their duties and responsibilities all while maintaining safety at the forefront of all those tasks.  The writer strongly believes that the Commander and First Sergeant must be on the same accord.
