This regulation sets forth policies, procedures, and responsibilities for the care and use of laboratory animals within Department of Defense programs. It covers any live vertebrate animal that is being used or is intended for use in research, training, or testing, or for experimentation purposes. It does not cover animals used for ceremonial or recreational purposes, military working animals, and farm animals, such as, but not limited to, livestock or poultry, used or intended for use as food or fiber, or livestock or poultry used or intended for use in improving animal nutrition, breeding, management, or production efficiency, or for improving the quality of food or fiber.
