This response is provided based on the information you shared and should not be used as the sole source for making a decision. You should seek guidance from the chain of command, IG, JAG or other certified agencies before making any decisions. How you chose to use this information is totally up to you and is your sole responsibility.

I am not sure what specific information you are looking for. A chapter 5-17 is covered under AR 600-20. Here is a link to the regulation: https://armypubs.army.mil/ProductMaps/PubForm/AR.aspx

Chapter 5-17 is explained on page 59. If you have any additional questions you can contact JAG and they can review the chapter action with you in detail and answer specific questions.

With that said, the process tends to go as follows:

  1. Soldier is counseled an notified of intent to separate.
  2. Depending on time in service (I believe it is 4 years), the Soldier may be entitled to a retention board to fight to stay in.
  3. Command initiates a medical screening physical and the Soldier is taken through an out-processing medical exam.
  4. Upon completion of medical examine and other protocols the Soldier is issued separation orders.
  5. The Soldier usually clears the post in 5-7 days and is separated from the Army.

It is key that the Soldier seeks guidance from JAG to determine their entitlements to VA Healthcare, VA Disability, Education benefits, ability to cash in leave, transportation of household goods to their new address, and another questions the Soldier may have. Make sure they provide answers in writing per the regulation. Soldier should also seek information from the behavioral health provider if they are undergoing such counseling.

Hopefully I have provided you some useful information!
