Are you a Mentor and Tor-mentor?

The comprehensive guide to the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP)

Have you ever had an individual come up to you and state they were going to Mentor you? What did you think when they said that to you. Typically in my mind I would say “How can you mentor me, I pick my mentors and usually they don’t even know they are my mentor”!

I realize the individual making this statement is trying to help. They can coach me, train me, and teach me, but generally, usually, typically, they are not mentoring me.

In some cases I have considered it tormentoring because the information shared was usually not what I would consider valuable.

I guess what I want to express is the individual approaching you usually really cares and means well. Perhaps it would be better just to relay the wisdom without expressing “Hey I am going to Mentor you”

Off the soap box…I don’t have many pet peeves but this is one of them. I wonder how many Soldier/Leaders I have Tormentored?

Has anyone else had this experience or am I the only one?
