It can be used as an example of a disqualification for the Army Good Conduct Medal memo if you ever need to write one. It states in part: You are disapproved for the award of the Army Good Conduct Medal for the period of Active Duty Service from (DATE) to (DATE) due to (AWOL, Article 15, Conviction by Court Martial, infractions of Army Values as noted on your counseling statements, etc).

It can but it totally up to the commander to make that decision. See AR 600-8-22
