Do monthly counseling statments have any impact in the civilian world?

My squad leader writes really weird stuff on my monthly counseling. The guy just doesn't get it. I don't think these have any impact in the civilian world and I don't plan on staying in the Army. Can I just refuse to sign or write some dumb comments to get a rise out of him?

Firstly, counseling statements have no impact in the civilian world. The DA Form 4856 states they should be destroyed when you leave the unit unless it is a rehabilitative transfer.

With regard to refusing to sign and writing “dumb comments to get a rise”  I would not recommend these actions as it lowers your creditability and professionalism. The best plan is to remain professional; simply disagree with significant inaccuracies. Keep your options open. I have known more than one Soldier who burned bridges because they were “getting out of the Army”  only to reenlist and have to live with the consequences of their poor choices. It’s a good life lesson, keep your options open, do what’s right and good things happen.

In the Army or Civilian life you will work for individuals who are difficult. Find a way to turn the relationship into an advantage. You will be a better person and leader for it.
