How many promotion points are needed to compete for E-5 and for E-6?

Under the new promotion system, what is the minimum promotion point to compete for E-5 and for E-6?

The Board Master - Army Promotion Board Study Guide

A Soldier must have a minimum passing APFT score to be integrated onto the promotion standing list. Hence, the minimum points required is 40 points for recommendation to SGT and 15 points for recommendation to SSG. Any Soldier the promotion authority identifies as having potential for promotion (with a passing APFT) will be added to the list–regardless of their points.

I finished all the SSD. I was wondering do they go on your ERB and do they count as points for promotion, and last which section do they go under.

I wasnt on the list, and I was going for E-5 and 290 points. I think it is the units resonsibility if they want to advance the soldiers careers. I don’t know otherwise why they would not.

Do either of you have this in plain black and white. I am having the same issue at my unit and they are kicking anyone back that doesnt have at least 450pt, who want to compete for SSG.

      Lieber,

My answer above is based on HRC’s guidance. Until AR 600-8-19 is updated, it will not be in any regulation. The official reference at the moment is the HRC FAQ Sheet which I based my answer on. I will send it to you thru e-mail.

    Hello SFC Mackie,

Could you please tell me where to reference the information for the answer you provided pertaining to the minimum points needed to be promotable to SSG for the new promotion system? My CSM is saying we need to look over my points because I may not be eligible to be promotable as a SGT with my points at 190 after being knocked down due to the new system. Thank you very much.

      SGT Schmiedeberg,

The reference for my answer is the HRC FAQ sheet. An updated version of AR 600-8-19 should include this verbage. Unfortuantely the updated regulation is still in the works and has not been published.

On another note, we can make sense of it by reasoning with the CLI policy. CLI Soldiers recommended for promotion to SSG get 14 points and those recommended to SGT get 39 points which are both 1 point lower than the minimum one can attain on an APFT. I am 100% sure that if you were ineligible, your ERB would not even indicate that you are promotable.

If your CSM has any questions, he may contact me by sending an e-mail thru this website. I’d be more than happy to provide more clarification.
