Prior service personnel receive a “Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty” which is more commonly known as the DD 214. the DD 214 is a quick summary of the servicemember’s service and includes awards received and training attended to name the least. This form will suffice as a source document to update your ERB.

My current S1 is telling me that my dd214 isn’t enough proof I earned an award and refuses to update my erb. What can I do? Maybe they don’t know how without a memo or 638. How can the add it without them?

How long ago did you get out? How long did you stay out of the service. You might be able to find a copy of your records at the National Archives Online. I would believe your 214 would be a valid source document as it was prepared by a trusted agent upon your ETS.
