You cannot be forced to buy optional equipment. If you are missing a piece of required equipment (meaning you were issued the item, you can be made to purchase the item. If you do not have money to purchase the item then unit supply can draw up a statement of charges and/or other appropriate paperwork so that you can purchase the equipment and the money will be taken directly from your check. In extremely rare cases, the command might also look into using unit funds and or loans from AER or other agencies.
