New Military Education points for promotions effective 1 Jan 2012

The Board Master - Army Promotion Board Study Guide

According to MILPER MSG 11-306, Soldiers will see an adjustment in promotion point distribution for military education on their Promotion Point Worksheet (PPW) on 5 December 2011. The change will become effective for Soldiers being promoted on 1 January 2012 and later.

Military education will be divided into three categories namely Professional Military Education (NCOES), Resident Military Training, and Computer Based Training. In addition, each of these categories will now include a maximum point value. In order to max out the points for military education, a Soldier will have to max out each of the three categories.

Category 1- Professional Military Education.

Includes appropriate NCOES and related academic and/or leadership achievements. The maximum points points in this section will be 104 for promotion to SGT and 112 for promotion to SSG. Points will be equivalent to the level of academic or leadership achievement upon graduation of appropriate NCOES, but point values readjusted as follows:

a. When competing for selection to SGT: WLC graduates will continue to receive 80 promotion points unless recognized as a member of the Commandant’s List, they will then receive 92 points. In order to receive the maximum points of 104 in this category the Soldier must have achieved Distinguished Honor Graduate status or be identified as the Distinguished Leadership Graduate.

b. When competing for selection to SSG: WLC graduates will continue to receive no promotions points. ALC graduates will now receive 90 promotion points. If recognized as having achieved Commandant’s List, they will now receive 101 points. In order to receive the maximum points of 112 in this category the Soldier must have achieved Distinguish Honor Graduate status or be identified as the Distinguished Leadership graduate.

Category 2- Resident Military Training

Includes all Resident Military Training Courses Listed In ATRRS; DA Form 87 limited to Soldier Training Courses in AR 350-1; and all tab-producing courses. Maximum points in this section is 78 points for promotion to SGT and 84 points for promotion to SSG.

Category 3- Computer Based Training

All non-resident military training including Army Correspondence Course Program (ACCP), Distance Learning (DI) and Army E-learning. The maximum points in this category is adjusted to 78 points for promotion to SGT and 84 points for promotion to SSG.

I am trying my hardest to make my E6. With this new promotion system it is really hard. I have 518 points right now and the cut off for last month was 543 so I missed it by a little. I am maxed out on mostly everything except awards, deployment (only had one), ALC, and resident training. I have five DA Form 87 all for two week courses that my S1 said they will not take because they don’t have a certain code for it and whatever they don’t have a code for they can’t use. I think that is so crazy because it is resident training and they won’t take none of them. If they did take my training which is worth 8 points each that would bring me up to 558 and would give me a better chance of making the list.

It won’t sound so crazy if you knew what people were doing to get promoted. In the old system it only took a 40hr course signed by your LTC or higher for the certificate to count towards military education regardless of what the training was. So why did they change it? Because people were taking ridiculous classes and LTC’s were signing them, like cooking and sewing and paper handling. The Army only recognizes course it believes furthers your professional development as a leader and NCO.

It sounds like you’re hurting on military education, a lot of SGT’s are. 265 max out on military ed (E-6 only) is not a duck walk anymore. There are a few ways you can quickly add up some points but it depends on your unit. Maxing out a PT test (300) rewards a Certificate of Achievement that is only 5 points and maxes out at 4. That’s 20 points right there the same as an ARCOM. Awards won’t be easy anymore; you have to play your CSM games to get them now. That includes competing in battalion, brigade, division physical and shooting competitions, Soldier/NCO of the Month boards, or some form of marching/honor guard to get some awards.

You need to get ALC, the Army is tired of people trying to skip the NCOES schools. First you need to complete Structural Self Development levels 1 and 2. You can find these classes on ATRRS and do not need approval from your unit to sign up for them. After completing those courses online you need to get to your schools S3 Sergeant and get ATRRS slotted for ALC residency course. Some units require you to finish the ALC-CC online portion first but I am not sure if it is required. Then of course your correspondence courses give you a max of only 81 points and that is only if you finished the entire module. Another option is to get ATRRS slotted for any or the HOOAH schools, i.e. Airborne, Air Assault, and Pathfinder etc. Your unit has to pay for you to go to these schools so might have to play favorites to get the slots.

Hi, I am a SGT(P)68V waiting to get promoted to SSG. My points were always maxed except for temporary drops to promote limited numbers. In my mos there were 42 SGT(P)’s in the primary zone last month and two were promoted at a 691 cutoff. I have 615 points and according to the trend sheet there are 4 soldiers in my mos including myself that are in the 600-650 point range. On 15 March 2012 the SFC selections were published. There were 12 SSG’s in my mos that were selected for promotion to SFC. From what I gather from others, this is an extremely rare event. I am wondering if this will mean that I have a viable chance for making the cutoff soon since there are a number or E6 slots opening up.Do you think that the points will drop dramatically soon in order to fill upcoming slots for E6 or do you think that the points will drop slowly?

My question was can any of the resident military training classes be done on the ALMS under AKO?

Anthony, Mackie was unable to reply to your comment due to a technical issue. We will be getting back to you shortly, though. Sorry for the delay! Thanks for the question.

      Anthony,

      Sorry for the delay!

Courses on ALMS count towards the computer-based training part of Military Education. Resident courses are done on installations with the student present.

how many courses/hours do you need to max the 78 points for the resident training?

      Andrew,

      Sorry for the delay!

To answer your question, it all depends on what training/courses you take. Soldiers will be granted 10 promotion points upon completion of each Soldier Training Course listed in AR 350-1. All other formal military training (less PME) in ATRRS will earn 4 points per week of training.

I am under RCP as it stands. I am to ETS July of 2012. If I was to make cutoff prior can i still reenlist? With the new promotion system, the way it was explained to me is that my unit only needs to of each. Two EO, two UPL, two etc… There are over ten NCOs in my unit. This means that out of all these possible classes, I am stuck with possibly only getting to do one in the three years I would have spent in my overseas unit. How does this make any sense? I also have the Master Driver course on my 348 but no certificate was given to me and my S1 says the 348 is invalid documents. Whats the point of traveling with the 348 from duty assignment to duty assignment if it is not “valid”. I have been promotable for five years and just recently, thanks to the new promotion system was allowed to start adding points. My unit in korea disbanded and i was never able to get the promotion board proceedings sent to me. when i PCS’d they gave me my “packet” in a sealed envelope which i’m instructed not to open. this envelope made it to my S1 who said i was not promotable due to the paperwork missing. my erb stated otherwise, but i was told oh well, go back to the board. deployment after deployment, who has time for all that. just thought i’d share my piece now that i have no other choice but to get out now. thank you big army my time was well served bending over for you.

I made the buy name list in the old promotion system, I then was auditted will I lose the ACCP I completed, or will I be good to be promoted after the Audit

      Jamar,

If you made cutoff for 1 Dec 11, you are not affected by the changes that will take effect for promotions with an effective date of 1 Jan 11. I am a bit surprised though that your audit is not already complete given that 1 Dec 11 has already passed. Regardless, it should not affect your promotion.

i am still trying to understand the matters at hand. if i make cut off for points on 24 dec (give or take), does that still count as 1 jan promotion?

    • Mackie

If you make cutoff on 24 December 11 or whenever the cutoff scores come out this month, your effective date of promotion will be 1 Jan 12.
